Usually by local residents, many grasshoppers are hunted for consumption and some are for sale, peddled on the side of the road, for additional family economic income.
Before we start on the recipe for processed grasshopper dishes, as usual we will find out what grasshoppers are, and what types of grasshoppers are usually consumed by Indonesian Javanese people.
grasshopper consists of three main stages in its life,
namely eggs, nymphs, and adults.
In addition, grasshoppers are also known as living creatures that have short horns and are included in the order Orthoptera and suborder Caelifera.
Usually grasshoppers have a brown or green color with dark spots on their bodies. Until now, there are about 11,000 species of grasshoppers living in Indonesia.
All types of species are usually herbivores and eat plants. Meanwhile, these insects often appear to be abundant in transitional weather and they also appear in summer. These flying insects generally have two pairs of wings, namely the front and hind wings. The forewings have a rough shape, while those for the hind wings are smoother.
This animal can be said to be a strong creature with large hind legs for jumping and short antennae. The female grasshopper has a larger size than the male grasshopper.
Another characteristic of the female locust is the presence of two pairs of valve structures at the end of the abdomen. They usually use valves to dig out the sand while laying their eggs. Then for the male grasshopper, there is one plate that is not paired.
Farmers assume that grasshoppers are destructive pests.
The grasshopper population is highest in areas that are cold at the beginning of the rainy season and in areas that are warm and dry. In addition, for grasshopper growth to be undisturbed, summer temperatures must be high and rainfall should be sufficient. On the other hand, if the weather is hot and the temperature is low in summer, it will result in a decrease in the locust population.
Indonesia has a tropical climate, so it is a good place for grasshoppers to live. Usually grasshoppers will breed during the dry season. Meanwhile, in areas or countries that have a subtropical climate, grasshoppers will usually breed after winter or when the weather starts to warm.
Then the eggs will hatch in a few weeks.
However, if the conditions are unfavorable, the eggs will hatch and survive for 9 days.
The life cycle of a grasshopper also consists of an incomplete metamorphosis process. Metamorphosis or imperfect hermimetabola is the development process through the egg stage which hatches and then becomes a nymph, and grows into an adult grasshopper or imago.
Obviously, this is the order of the grasshopper's life.

grasshopper egg |
egg
Grasshoppers start with eggs. Midsummer, the female locust begins to lay fertilized eggs in the egg pods, usually under the sand to a depth of about 3 to 5 cm or between the leaf horns. Each egg consists of 10 to 300 eggs with a shape similar to a grain of rice.
Grasshopper eggs take a long time to finally hatch, which is about 10 months. However, not all eggs can hatch at the same time because the abilities of all eggs are not the same. In addition, these eggs will remain active before hatching time and can sleep during the fall and winter. Please note that it takes a female locust to lay eggs is about 3 to 4 days.

young grasshopper |
nymph (nimfa)
When the eggs have hatched, a small grasshopper will appear that does not yet have wings, physically its shape is not much different from an adult grasshopper. This phase can be said to be a young nymph. These young nymphs are white in color and will turn green or brown when exposed to sunlight. In that phase, grasshoppers can eat young plants with a soft texture.
Although they do not have wings and reproductive organs, these grasshoppers can still survive. It will experience 5 to 6 times the skin changes and changes the shape and structure of its body into an adult.
At this stage, the grasshopper takes about 5 to 10 days depending on the species and weather conditions, including humidity and temperature.
Its size will also increase as the wing pads also develop. Also note that the nymph's survival to survive as an adult grasshopper is only about 50% because other nymphs are used as food by natural predators, ranging from lizards, mice, to birds.
Mature
Grasshoppers do have incomplete metamorphosis. The grasshopper's wings will fully develop within 25 to 30 days and the mature nymph will become an adult grasshopper. In addition to having perfect wings, adult grasshoppers will also get sexual maturity within 15 days and will last for 30 days. The time required for the grasshopper life cycle from egg to adult grasshopper is 11 months.
The age of the grasshopper itself is estimated to only last up to 12 months. In addition, grasshoppers also provide food for many predators in the food chain.
Grasshoppers or grasshoppers play a major role in the effective functioning of the ecosystem.
Birds, lizards, mice, are the main predators of grasshoppers. By being a food source for many predators in the food chain.
Now that's the life cycle and appearance of the grasshopper, which we must know before we eat it,
Now it's just a matter of processing it to be used as a main meal or a snack.
